The Story Behind the NAትNA AWATE T-Shirt

The NAትNA AWATE T-shirt is more than a graphic tee. It is inspired by Eritrean history, identity, courage, and the spirit of a people who value freedom and self-determination.

Named after Hamid Idris Awate, the design honors a figure closely associated with the beginning of Eritrea’s armed struggle for independence. On September 1, 1961, Awate and a small group of fighters launched the resistance in western Eritrea, an event remembered as the beginning of a struggle that would continue for roughly 30 years.

A little-known fact: Awate was already around 50 years old when the armed struggle began. His story shows that courage and leadership are not limited by age.

The AWATE design connects that history with a modern streetwear aesthetic. The goal is not simply to place history on a shirt, but to create something the next generation can wear, recognize, and ask questions about.

Designed especially with the Eritrean diaspora in mind, the AWATE T-shirt allows culture and history to live beyond books and photographs. Wear it at festivals, community gatherings, concerts, or simply as part of your everyday style.

At NAትNA, we believe fashion can carry a story.

AWATE — Remember the history. Carry the identity. Wear it forward.
